Hikvision RTSP setup: channel paths and camera accounts

On this page

Use the Hikvision device's configured RTSP port and /Streaming/channels/101 for channel-one main video, or /102 for its substream. Authenticate with the addressed device's account. Check exact firmware settings; CameraViewer physical-camera compatibility remains unverified.

Read the configured port before copying a URL

Hikvision's RTSP formula combines the device address, RTSP port, channel and stream number. That support article lists 554 and 10554 in different authentication examples. Use the configured port shown by your device and its model documentation. A copied port number is a starting hypothesis until you confirm it.

Record whether you are connecting directly to a camera or to a recorder. Include the model and firmware in your notes. The compatibility page describes the evidence needed before calling a camera tested in CameraViewer.

Select the channel and stream

Here are placeholders with credentials entered separately:

rtsp://DEVICE_IP:RTSP_PORT/Streaming/channels/101
rtsp://DEVICE_IP:RTSP_PORT/Streaming/channels/102
rtsp://DEVICE_IP:RTSP_PORT/Streaming/channels/201

In Hikvision's formula, 101 selects channel-one main video, 102 selects channel-one sub video, and 201 selects channel-two main video. Preserve the path's spelling and replace both address and port placeholders.

Use the account belonging to the addressed device. For a recorder connection, verify its channel assignment before assuming that channel one represents the camera you want. Write a short scene label alongside each tested URL so a successful connection to the wrong camera is easy to spot. The RTSP viewer guide explains the common URL fields.

Keep ONVIF account setup separate

Hikvision's ONVIF walkthrough opens the protocol page under Configuration > Network > Advanced Settings and creates an ONVIF account. Its instructions include other CGI and authentication settings; apply them only after checking the instructions for your firmware.

Another Hikvision explanation says to look for “Open Network Video Interface” when the ONVIF label is absent. It describes firmware without either option as using camera credentials with ONVIF already active. This is a documented menu variation, so a missing label alone cannot settle whether the service exists.

The ONVIF setup guide explains why discovery, authentication and video need separate checks. None of these manufacturer instructions establishes CameraViewer discovery support.

Diagnose address, account and video separately

If the connection times out, compare the current device address and configured RTSP port with your saved URL. If it rejects authentication, check which device owns the account. If it opens the wrong scene, inspect the channel number. If it accepts the connection without displaying video, record the stream codec and resolution before changing account settings.

CameraViewer's current evidence covers manual RTSP setup and H.264 fixture video. This guide cannot promise playback from an untested Hikvision camera or recorder. Keep a record of the exact stream you tried and follow the connection troubleshooting steps for a repeatable next attempt.

Keep the Hikvision connection resource beside your notes when checking the documented channel format and firmware limits.

Common questions

What do 101 and 102 mean in a Hikvision RTSP URL?

Hikvision combines the channel number with 01 for the main stream or 02 for the substream. These paths select channel-one main and sub video.

Does Hikvision always use a separate ONVIF account?

No. Hikvision documents account creation in one settings walkthrough and default camera credentials on firmware lacking the described ONVIF setting. Check the exact device and firmware.
